I have been interested in photography from a young age. Mum & Dad let me use their cameras and I learnt some of the basics. Focus carefully, if at all, keep still and think a little bit before you press the shutter. After some years of producing duds I started to display a little technique.
So, one Christmas I saved my money and bought a Kodak 44B camera.
It used 127 film, had three shutter speeds and three apertures. It was a good start. I belonged to the school camera club and started darkroom work. The smell of hypo – such perfume!
Just before I went up to University, I bought my first 35mm camera – a Yashica J.
This gave me a lot of fun and eventually was replaced by a Pentax Spotmatic 1000. I worked a winter term taking mathematics at Yeovil Technical College to earn the money to pay for it.
My final film camera was a beauty designed by the Porsche company – a Contax RTS2.
I was lucky in being able to use very nice equipment by saving hard and looking after the gear.
In the early 2000s, I dived into digital with a Nikon D100.
So from now on it was Nikon all the way. A D200, D7000, D800 (much loved).
Then a D7200 – this is my carry camera and has been a loyal servant for many years.
and finally a D850 – and is used for tripod – high definition work. .
